U.S. Federal Warnings: Prevention of Diseases from Exposure to Biocontaminants in Damp Buildings

If you have a suspected mold problem in your living, working or school environment, don’t go on the Internet, read the devastation of worst case scenarios and think this automatically applies to you. Odds are it does not. Do educate yourself to the symptoms that can occur from exposure to the contaminants in damp buildings and take steps to mitigate your and your loved ones’ exposure.
 
The following is information published by various U.S. federal agencies. There is a good chance your physician is not well educated to these facts and may even have it ingrained in his/her thought process that they are false facts. This issue is highly contentious because of the potential for financial liability for causation of illness for insurers, employers, landlords, property sellers, property maintainers,builders and school districts and even the federal government itself.
 
13.03.08 Thus the NotionMuch like the Big Tobacco Issue, for many years misinformation has been provided to your doctor over this issue via “non-profit” medical associations, medical schools, think-tanks and lobbyists. This is for the purpose of Misleading Courts to deny liability for causation of illness and death. The misinformation claiming proof of lack of causation in policy and courts, is frequently parroted by the Media.
 
Armed with the below information, you and your physician should be able to determine if your living, working or school environment is a probable cause or contributor, if you are having symptoms of ill health. You and your physician should be able to understand why they are not educated to these facts.
 
NIOSH Alert: Preventing Occupational Respiratory Disease from Exposures Caused by Dampness in Office Buildings, Schools, and Other Nonindustrial Buildings ~ Office buildings, schools, and other nonindustrial buildings may develop moisture and dampness problems from roof and window leaks, high indoor humidity, and flooding events, among other things. For this Alert, we define “dampness” as the presence of unwanted and excessive moisture in buildings [AIHA 2008]. This can lead to the growth of mold, fungi, and bacteria; the release of volatile organic compounds; and the breakdown of building materials. We use the term “mold” for a group of fungi that are common on wet materials. Outdoors, molds live in the soil, on plants, and on dead or decaying matter. There are thousands of species of molds and they can be any color. Different mold species can adapt to different moisture conditions. Research studies have shown that exposures to building dampness and mold have been associated with respiratory symptoms, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, rhinosinusitis, bronchitis, and respiratory infections. Individuals with asthma or hypersensitivity pneumonitis may be at risk for progression to more severe disease if the relationship between illness and exposure to the damp building is not recognized and exposures continue.
 
Berkeley Labs Health Risks of Mycotoxins From Damp Buildings ~ Some molds can produce highly toxic chemicals called mycotoxins under some growth conditions. Some bacteria can also produce toxic chemicals. The potential health effects of mycotoxins have been reviewed by a committee of the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine [1]. These mycotoxins may be constituents of the particles released into indoor air. Studies with exposures to living cells and animals indicate that some mycotoxins are very potent. Documented or suspected health effects from mycotoxins in these studies include tremors, loss of coordination, lesions, increased levels of chemicals linked to inflammation, immune system suppression, cell death, and animal death.
 
13.03.08 EPA all moldsEnvironmental Protection Agency Health Effects Associated With Molds (Appendix B) ~ When moisture problems occur and mold growth results, building occupants may begin to report odors and a variety of health problems, such as headaches, breathing difficulties, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and aggravation of asthma symptoms; all of these symptoms could potentially be associated with mold exposure. All molds have the potential to cause health effects. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, toxins that may cause reactions in humans. The types and severity of symptoms depend, in part, on the types of mold present, the extent of an individual’s exposure, the ages of the individuals, and their existing sensitivities or allergies.
 
Occupational Safety & Health Administration Indoor Air Quality in Commercial and Institutional Buildings ~ Persistent dampness and microbial growth on interior surfaces and in building structures should be avoided or minimized as they may lead to adverse health effects (15)”. “Numerous species of bacteria and fungi, in particular filamentous fungi (mold), can contribute significantly to indoor air pollution (4, 15-20)…Damp Indoor Environments have been associated with many serious health effects, including asthma, hypersensitivity, and sinusitis. Moisture incursion leading to dampness can result from water leaks and/or by condensation due to high humidity.
 
Katy’s Exposure Blog So Where’s The Bottleneck????? 2009 WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality – Dampness and Mold ~  In 2009, the World Health Organization issued a report regarding known illnesses caused by exposure to microbes found in water damaged building. Within the report, they accurately state that exposure to molds and toxins can cause a perturbing of the immune system. The US Department of Transportation has found that a Federal employee was permanently disabled from his chronic inflammation caused by exposure to microbes in the water damaged Detroit Metro Air Traffic Controller Tower. There is an ICD-9 Code for these illnesses of Chronic Inflammatory Response from exposures in Water Damaged Buildings, CIRS-WDB. US OSHA has issued health advisories in which they, too, recognize the perturbance of the immune system from poor indoor air quality of moldy buildings.   This post was updated on October 21, 2011 to reflect the current state of politics and why and how information continues to be suppressed of the serious illness caused by water damaged buildings.
 
Here’s The Bottleneck, Its Corruption In the Courts!!!!
The San Diego, California Courts have been Colluding with expert defense witnesses in mold litigation for now eight years to defraud public over Mold Issue. They suppressed evidence of criminality in Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation, Bruce Kelman & GlobalTox, Inc. vs. Sharon Kramer, San Diego, California, to aid the scientific fraud to continue in policies, claims handling practices and courts. In a second case, they tried to stop Sharon (to no avail) from writing of what they have done to her by criminal means to defraud the public over the mold issue.
 
Leading justices of the California judicicial branch, framed Sharon for libel for the words, “altered his under oath statements” in the first public writing (March 9, 2005) to expose how commerce was able to get scientific fraud marketed into public health policy for the purpose of influencing the courts and while their experts, plaintiffs in these cases, generate handsome incomes as expert defense witnesses in mold litigations across the US – off the backs of the sick, injured and dying. 
 
In a second case, in which the courts are trying to silence her by hook or by crook of their role in defrauding the public, they jailed Sharon (ordered March 9, 2012) for refusing to be coerced into signing a false confession of libel to conceal what they have done and continue to do to defraud the public.  In addition to falsifying many court documents to conceal judgments that never were, they have also concealed that Bryan Hardin, retired US Assistant Surgen General and Deputy Director of CDC/NIOSH has been an undisclosed party to the malicious litigations all along. Kelman and Hardin are the paid for hire authors of the US Chamber’s mold statement.
 
THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM THE CORRUPT CALIFORNIA COURTS ARE CONCEALING ~ The US Chamber’s “Scientific View” cites false physician authorship & false university affiliation, was paid for by a think-tank, was written with the express direction that it should be something judges can understand and is used by political action committees to mislead courts. The entire false concept that mold is not toxic when found in a water damaged building, is based on one set of never vetted extrapolations by Kelman & Hardin to form such the outrageously unscientific conclusion of proof of lack of causation from toxins in water damaged buildings. What the U.S. Chamber’s Scientific View of the Health Effects of Mold says to “educate” judges, while people are losing everything from the deadly, hateful, deceptive  marketing scheme to defraud the public and taxpayer is “Thus the notion that Toxic Mold is an insidious secret killer as so many trial lawyers and media would claim is ‘Junk Science” unsupported by actual scientific study.”

“I hope this expose’ includes the role of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) in this fiasco. This “non-profit” trade association of workers comp physicians which influences guidelines for many worker environmental exposures and thus workers comp insurer liability/influence in the guidelines; needs to be publicly exposed for their “error” over this and many other environmental illnesses. Its their journal, JOEM, which published the false Chinese research which was misquoted when translated into English by ChemRisk who was working for PG&E.
 
When Environmental Working Group and the Wall Street Journal exposed the scientific fraud, ACOEM retracted the paper. Too bad they don’t do that with all publications they have published wrongfully using misleading evidence to promote concepts by industry which downplay probable causes of environmental illnesses. Global Indoor Health Network, GIHN, strikes again!

Katy’s Exposure is all about exposing environmental health threats and those responsible. Sometimes, those responsible are those who profess to be aiding to curtail the environmental health threats.

PinocchioWe absolutely cannot understand why anyone would want their names associated with GIHN while letting their names be used to lend credibility to this group. A couple of weeks ago, we received some messages to Katy’s Exposure Blog that people had been referred remediators and IAQ advisors by this group, that increased their damages after a poor IAQ problem was discovered – not remediated them. 

Besides Katy’s people have also been looking for help on Facebook:

“What do you mean they don’t refer out, XXX?” “they refer out to consultants that are members of GIHN despite their disclaimer stating otherwise.. they also refer dr on their board” “Oh I didn’t know there was a disclaimer. That is how I found all the people I spoke to by their referrals. The Attorneys, the Mold Guys, everyone. Not unless they are saying they don’t refer outside. I’m missing something.”

Whether correct or not with their complaints, upon asking for help from GIHN, their character was attacked in some pretty viscous emails. So we posted their comments on Katy’s and let the BOD of GIHN know of the problem, once again having to do it publicly. 

Did GIHN acknowledge the problem? Did they do anything to apologize for the referrals gone awry or try to mitigate the claimed damages? Did they send a note of apology to the people who had been attacked for stating they had a problem? Did they acknowledge any accountability for the damage done from their acts? Did they thank us for bringing the problem to their attention (publicly, after they blew the people w/problems off)? NOPE! They just CHANGED their website to highlight that they don’t give referrals.

This group professes to be the voice of the mold community and professes it is all about getting the “Truth About Mold” out. They write of the “Big Lie” of the naysayers over the mold issue and how they are helping to stop the lies over this issue. 

Pure Nonsense!!!!  We have caught them directly in a BIG LIE to the GIHN members themselves about a spin in science they put out (and later corrected when we outted the scientific fraud, harmful to the credibility of the mold community, for which they attacked us for sounding the alarm.)

EBlast to the members of GIHN from the President, December 2012: 

We have exciting news to share with you…. “Indoor air pollution causes 50% of illnesses globally.” When we decided to use that quote, we assumed (since it was such a specific statement) that it was part of Mr. Fiahagbe’s presentation.  We have confirmed that our assumption was correct.  Mr. Fiahagbe did use that quote in his presentation. 

Contrary to the lie the members of GIHN were told, Mr. Fiahagbe made no such statement in his presentation in Ghana, Africa, which is absurd. If poor IAQ caused 50% of illnesses globally, that would make it the #1 cause of illness worldwide.  The actual quote is, “Mr Ebenezer Fiahagbe, a Senior Programme Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has said indoor pollution has been as among the top five environmental risks to public health” http://www.ghanabusinessnews.com/2011/02/21/indoor-air-pollutants-among-top-five-environmental-risks-to-public-health/ ]

GIHN quietly removed the “correct assumption” that was the “exciting news” to its members.  We heard not a word for saving their arses from getting caught in depositions and on witness stands as experts having to defend a lie – as people’s expert witnesses and thus cases were discredited and damaged.  Any group that cannot hold themselves accountable for errors and move to correct the damage to people from their errors while caught lying about the errors to conceal they are errors, has no business or credibility that they are helping to stop the misdeeds and lies of others on behalf of the mold community.

It is NOT OKAY to make changes while concealing prior errors and leaving the damage from the errors unaddressed.  This group has caused more divisiveness in this issue among the mold community and its physicians than any group out there; thereby aiding the scientific fraud of the naysayers to remain in policy and courts that it is proven illnesses from mold toxins in water damaged buildings “Could not be”.

As such, there are seventeen words in the English language that the leader of the GIHN needs to learn if she is going to profess to help people, not harm them, in this issue. Those words are: “I am sorry. I made a mistake. What do I need to do to mitigate the damages?” 

Quite frankly, right now the org appears to us to be run by a bunch of caddy, gossipy, lying, self serving, *&%$$ who cannot accept responsibility for their actions!  And we are not the only ones who have observed this trait or the serious damage to many from it.

We don’t need this in this issue.  There are enough lies to fight from those who are VERY WELL CONNECTED &  NAYSAY the causation of illness and who are benefiting from the spins, deceptions and lack of self accountability of GIHN; causing divisiveness and damage to the advocacy community and to those already harmed by mold and lies.

Enough already, GIHN!  When you screw up, acknowledge it and move to mitigate the damages – or get out of the advocacy game.  And while you are at it, quit gossiping. This is not a game. Thousands of people’s lives are at stake. You’ve done enough harm to being able to shed light on how the naysaying scientific fraud remains in policy and courts to the detriment of those injured by water damaged buildings.

Over the past year, Mr. William Windsor of LAWLESS AMERICA has traveled the country filming people who have been harmed by corruption in our courts. Upon compiling thousands of video testimonials from citizens from all across the United States for a documentary film, it has become glaringly apparent that the Constitution and laws written by the Legislative Branch are being disregarded by the Judicial Branch of government. This rampant disregard for the laws is captured in the video testimonials from every state in the nation.

The evidence is overwhelming. Compliance with the Rule of Law and the Constitution are not even considerations within countless judicial proceedings all across the United States. Blatant and often collusive abuses of power by these government officials to dictate outcomes of peoples lives unjustly, makes this a crisis situation. Legislative representatives who have been elected by the People and empowered to write the laws can serve no purpose when the Judicial Branch ignores these laws.

As your constituent and a United States citizen, I am urging you to support my plea to stop corruption within the courts. In conjunction with Lawless America and fellow citizens from across the nation, we want you to endorse House and Senate Committees holding public hearings regarding the mass devastation being caused by alarmingly compromised judicial systems throughout the United States.

The justice systems established by our government must comply with the United States and State Constitutions and the Rule of Law. Otherwise, the laws written by our elected representatives, the United States Constitution and State Constitutions are legal documents unlawfully rendered void by government officials and officers of the courts.

The problem can only be solved by the leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate recognizing these unconstitutional acts by the Judicial Branch, then calling upon the legislature’s delegated powers to terminate these abusive practices. Measures implemented by the legislature to assure accountability within the Judicial Branch will curtail these travesties of justice. Congress, working together with the People, can restore a legitimate government that complies with the Constitutions and assures legal systems that apply the Rules of Law.

Lawless America has prepared abbreviated video presentations of horrendous cases that have devastated the lives of people by unlawful judicial proceedings. Your office is being provided a copy by one of the hundreds of people currently in DC seeking the legislature’s help to stop the systemic court corruption. The intent of delivering the videos is to show you what is occurring all across the country and why U.S. Congressional public hearings are the most effective means to implement the change required.

Public hearing must be held in the appropriate subcommittees within the House and Senate Judiciary Committees and Homeland Security/Government Accountability Committees as soon as possible. Congressional committees working with the People to prepare a series of Congressional public hearings on this critical issue are the most effective utilization of resources possible.

The Congressional public hearings and live testimonies are needed for decision makers to obtain the information required to identify these abuses and to implement effective solutions that will restore a legitimate government in accordance with laws established by the Legislative Branch.

As my elected representiative, please tell the Chairs and Ranking Members of the House and Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security/Government Accountability Committees that you support and endorse the need for public hearings on corruption and conflicts of interest in the judiciary. You support that those who are to protect the law must be held accountable when they disobey the law. You, as an elected official of the government of United States, support the need for Congressional public hearings.
