Hi Katy, I would like to add Irvine Company to this list of offenders. After living at Newport Bluffs owned by Irvine Company in Newport Beach, CA we became incredibly sick and almost died there. Here is a link to our yelp review: https://www.yelp.com/biz/newport-bluffs-newport-beach-2
We are currently involved in litigation with Irvine Company with over 100 of us defending ourselves against this criminal landlord.
This landlord also has several properties, see these links, that have severe mold problems that they continue to sweep them under the rug:

Thank You- Rob
I rented this beautiful loft in the country! The owner lived in a big house a ways up the hill. He hired someone to remoldel the shower which apparently was ridden with mold! As the guy cut all the tile and wall he had left debris all over my house on my bed, all over my bird, my computer, etc… I saw massive mold on the wall sheet rock! Well this happened in 2006-2007@ I never did anything about it but complain to the landlord he said he would clean it up, but I said I can do that he apologized! I also didn’t have a shower and was working full time, and he said I could use his families extra bathroom but I declined. I didn’t feel comfortable! So he told me to use the garden hose to take a shower, and I did!! But now my mind is fuzzy, and I forget a lot! I never linked it to this event until I saw your story on T.V.
That definately sounds like one for the notorious landlord catagory!
My fiancée and I rented this townhouse in March 2014. Before we moved into the house it needed a lot of work to be done to it still. I was eager to move and wanted our family under one roof so we decided to get this place although my fiancée didn’t like it. Before we moved in there were water stains on the ceiling in the kitchen, the whole house needed two more coats of paint, the ceiling fan in the bedroom shook violently and the light bulbs rattled in the fan, the dish washer leaked every so often, the patio door didn’t lock properly and the molding at the bottom of the door would get wet and wet up the carpet when it rained which would cause the carpet to smell which is a sign of mold, one of the knobs on the washing machine came off and the dryer started squeaking after two months of use, the carpeting at the beginning of the bathroom floor began to lift up whenever I vacuumed that area, and the AC unit began to leak and wet the hallway and bathroom area which we had to lay multiple towels down to suck up the water as well as use a carpet shampooer to suction up majority of the water. Then on top of all of this, the ceiling in the kitchen developed a whole which began to leak water onto our kitchen floor that we reported to the company as soon as it happened. The property owner did not take immediate action which resulted in my mother-in-law slipping and falling resulting in her hitting her head on the kitchen floor. We handed in a list of repairs a month and a half prior to July 2nd and they never sent anyone over to fix anything except a guy that came out 5 times to fix our bathroom toilet that he never fixed! We called the owner of the property and complained about what was going on. We withheld the rent until a portion of the things got fixed. The property manager had a “real plumber” come out and fix the problem with the leak over our kitchen but it has been almost 2 weeks and we have a hole in our kitchen ceiling that the property manager has yet to fix, they had someone come and fix the AC unit however the AC unit is still leaking and causing the carpet to get a little wet. The smell of mildew is present in the home and while lifting up the carpet their is mold present under several parts of the carpet through out the house. I have took pictures of this, the property managers assistant has taken pictures and yet they have not done anything but send a carpet cleaner to the house. When mold is growing “which has been there before we moved in” you have to remove the carpet and the padding and treat the mold accordingly. The property manager set a time of 5:00pm on Monday July 1, 2014 for us to pay the rent and when my fiancée called his assistant at 4:15pm she said that the property manager said to not accept and payment from him. (He refused payment on his own agreement) That same day we were served with an eviction paper to vacate the premises within10 days. We are going to request a hearing before a judge. Not only has this property manager not taken the proper actions to evict us he was unprofessional, egotistic, un- empathetic to my mother-in-law falling. We never met this man and he only texts my fiancée or relays messages through his assistant. The owner of the house and his family had to replace our bathroom toilet and replace our ceiling fan in our bedroom and he’s going to replace the carpet and patio door. If the owner is under contract and pays this man to manage his properties why is he fixing things? Something is not right and we are NOT SATISFIED CONSUMERS!
Carolina Gardens on Staten Island NY ruined my life…. lived there 18 years … as I slowly became sick… started off with constant sinus infections, asthma, headaches, lethargy. Escalated to Lupus, blood clots, Hypothyroid, Gastrointestinal issues ( gastritis ) , loss of hormones, Sight, Liver enzymes elevated, arthritic hands, systemic Candida, distended abdomen, fatigued adrenals , memory loss, depression, anxiety, nervous system dysfunction, on and on and on…. still continues today. Letters were sent complaining, about water leaks…. calls were made,… letters to NYC Heath Dept, EPA. HPD NYC. Attorney General, Mayors Office NYC… Ceiling in bathroom collapse due to chronic slow leaks, Leaks under the house… Finally hired Ed Olmstead Environmental, he found colonizing molds growing thru out the apt. Checked the crawl space only to find filth…. water , debris, Asbestos defrayed, no vapor barrier, No insulation. To date many people have died who lived there…. other’s still living there who suffer without understanding the danger. This is a very old Moldy filthy complex ~!!! Court documents with NYC courts ,,, along with other letters to various NYC councilmen .. yet this complex was never sited … nothing ever done !! Criminal at best !
Why isn’t the Allure Apartment & Lofts not on this list. There are so many negative posts about this facility I ended up NOT moving there. Thank goodness. I’m in small claims court with them and I never had a key never moved in.
I saw that some one had posted mold exposure about the Renton Pebble Cove Apartments… I am living here now and have been living in a black mold infested apartment for six months and now we are taking them to court. All they want to do is comp of one month of rent and dry clean my clothes!!! I have a infant that has been living it in as well and I am going to the doctors to go get checked… I would really like to talk to the person that posted about Pebble Cove Apartments in Renton… please contact me!

Stay away from Portofino apartments in Pittsburg, CA managed by Riverstone Management group. The apartments are full of black mold, leaks, mice and roaches. The management will evict you if you complain, and they will lie in your face about the mold issue. My son and I got sick, and we have a lawsuit pending.
We have been living in Ingleside Quarters for seven months we have called the office and the landlord over and over again. The landlord had someone to come out all he did was painted over the molds . I have been to the doctor over and over again the past few months. The doctor could never find out what wasd making me dizzy with head aches. I had to be taking to the hospital one morning. who do we call to help us with our problem?
Fina Professional Services. This company is owned and operated by Donna Finklestien. I signed a lease with this Landlord a for a small 2 bedroom house. Three months after moving into the house me and my roommate experienced some health issues: Rashes, coughing, sneezing and respiratory issues. Then we noticed the appearance of mold in the bathroom. My roommate had to take two trips to the emergency room for antibiotics and anti fugal medicine. My roommate has a heart condition which compromised his immune system. The exposure over time weakened him greatly and became very, very sick.
We did some mold testing before approaching the landlord to present evidence, so we can have paper work to back our complaint. We informed the landlord of the findings and that despite the lease we agreed upon we would like to break contract and receive a refund of the deposit. She responded very negatively to the complaints, yelling and no sense of any dispute resolution . She was very unprofessional and called us liars and she would take us to court for the full term of the lease, adding on charges for lawyer cost and damages.
We noticed a sour smell when we first moved in and she stated it was because of the shampooing of the carpet earlier in the week. She stated the carpet was fairly new. Later we found that was not the case. We asked was there any standing water in the house at one time. At first her answer was no, when informed her that the next door neighbor can validate there was standing water in the house, she became defensive and stated there was a leak from the kitchen sink. We noticed there was some warping on the baseboards of the kitchen and living room. The carpet was at least 5 years old.
We presented the lab results we had and it did show over 6 different kinds of molds and allergens but they were not at toxic levels. All we wanted was a release from the contract and the deposit back because we feared for our safety, and didn’t have the money for the hospital bills that were accumulating. She wanted to launch an investigation to test the house for mold. We were not given any documentation from those results, and she said should at least replace the carpets. We refused to stay and moved out less than a week later. The rashes and all health issues disappeared rapidly.
Over the course of a few months we have had mediation to settle this matter and is still in the works now. With some research we noticed Fina Professional Services is not even registered with the state of Florida as a recognized business or corporation. The Fictious name registration is expired. We have been harassed by threats of suit and we are being forced to give thousands of dollars to keep this out of court because we signed the least. She showed no concern what so ever for the health issues and was only concerned about the property. Currently there are no laws written on regulation of mold and how it affects living conditions at this. I was even threatened with and aggressive lawsuit when informed her I called Code enforcement. If you do rent from the woman expect to never get your deposit back. There is no exit clause written in the lease. We were also subjected to a terrorist check which I found very odd. We had to list the name, age, and breed of our two cats that we have had for about 6 years directly on the lease. The purpose if this complaint is honestly to warn anyone if they are thinking of renting from Donna Finklestien or Fina Professional services. Do not rent from this individual, she is a scam artist and has no concern for human life only money.
THE BELOW complaint includes MOLD problems at Lexington Farms Apartments a Riverstone Residential Group managed property. They had the gall to charge me for MOLD CLEAN-UP/REMOVAL.
I lived in one of the over 200,000 properties managed by the Riverstone Residential Group. Riverstone is the flagship third-party management group for CAS Partners.
The below quote is an excerpt from a page on their website: http://www.riverstoneres.com/credit
“CAS Screening & Riverstone Receivables (CAS SRR) enables maximum profitability through its unique credit screening services, and ensures a high rate of recovery for Riverstone Residential Group’s accounts receivable.”
I am here to let the unsuspecting renter know how this huge corporation takes advantage of the “common man” – the “little people” tenants just like you and me. Tenants who move into Riverstone Residential managed properties. Incidentally, tenants will most likely not even know who Riverstone Residential Group is – not until the tenants receive THE LETTER. This letter arrives several weeks after tenants move out and will contain a list of phony charges including everything from mold removal, carpet replacement, painting, fixture replacement, appliance repair and replacement, carpet replacement, and so forth.
The Raleigh, NC property where I lived is over 20 years old. The apartment had leaky windows and drainage problems, among other things. The windows and the window ledges grew mold. While living there, I found it necessary to keep a spray bottle filled with a solution of Clorox and water. I frequently and repeatedly sprayed and wiped up mold. Complaints about mold were useless. In fact, I was treated as if the mold didn’t exist. The leasing office was dismissive and said, “Well, when you see window moisture soak it up.” Their maintenance people told me to spray with Clorox. Perhaps Riverstone’s Corporate Policy is to act as if mold doesn’t exist.
However, several weeks after I moved out, I received THE LETTER. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was being charged for mold removal (plus other things not yet described). While living there I took pictures of the ever-present mold. I took pictures of the mouse feces. I took pictures of the drainage problems. I took pictures of the nasty AC unit and the black mold on an interior two-by-four. I collected a library of pictures. All the windows leaked. These windows are not regular size; they are floor-to-ceiling and are attractive. When a tenant moves in, the windows are clean. But soon, these structures start growing fungus. So you investigate. You look deeper. You peer into the cracks and see black mold. You get a magnifying glass and inspect the painted ledges; and during this examination of the dips, nooks, crannies, and corners, black mold is found. You open the windows and inspect the seals, and you see mold and dirt. You wonder how dirt got up onto the window ledges that are a foot off the ground. Then you remember “THE POND.” This body of water is located immediately outside the apartment, inches away from the moldy windows. But, this “pond” only appears after a heavy rain or snow.
Next you inspect the kitchen herb window. Both rust and mold are growing in and around the ledges, corners, cracks, and screws. With your camera in hand, you take pictures and macro pictures (close ups). Somewhere in your mind, you know this issue could be unhealthy.
Reader, my complaints are extensive. It is a story I continue to write. My next chapter called, Mouse Feces in the Oven, Cabinets, and Drawers, is a roller-coaster ride of frustration and anger. My Clorox and water solution came in real handy.
How do you add someone to this list??
Beware of Pillar Communities LLC in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Pillar Communities are high-end rental properties in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. They lost a very significant mold case in which they caused a person to become permanently disabled. They have been involved in many… MANY mold cases. In my opinion, no-one should EVER RENT AT ANY PILLAR COMMUNITY!
If you (whomever manages this site/list) could make it possible to add landlord and property information, that would be very helpful to others.
Yeah….stay away from Pine Rush Village in Gainesville Florida on SW 20th ave. They have mold too…..I am trying to break my lease but they won’t let me and I have had a sore throat for 3 months now….*~Michelle~*
Too bad I can’t ad one more apartment onto your list! Stay away from Park of Lake Magdalene Apartments in Tampa, FL 33618
This place is covered in black mold and they don’t take it serious what they are doing to people living here.
One of the “notorious landlords” listed in this website is where my son just rented.

Does your site indicate that this complex has mold problems throughout, just in certain apt.? Thanks. Any help is appreciated.

I’m sorry for what happened to you. I’m sure your attorney is counting on you not being able to sue. We did not even get to that point so that is the reason for this site. katy
my husband and i are terribly sick from mold exposure for 7 years on a moldy apartment in Redding Connecticut whose owner is a psychiatrist. the only medicine that works for us is IVIgG which cost 6,500 dollars every 3 weeks. we hired a law firm that work with our case only the weekend of our trial. the day of our trial we were forced to settle because one hour before the trial our lawyer told us that if we dont settle for the 50,000 dollars that the insurance have on the table we need a new lawyer to represent us for our case. sadly and angry we settled and now we dont know what to do because we only got half of the settlement after our lawyer took out his expenses we dont have enough to do our treatment. can anyone advised us on what to do. do we still have the right to do anything else now that our bad landlord got away with it. do we have the right to go against lawyer malpracticed? Please advised reasonably because we dont have the money to pursue anything this time expecting our big health expenses.
I lived in a 3 bedroom apt. for 5 long years and stayed sick the whole time . , never knowing that the bedroom I used for storage was engulped with mildew . I do smoke cigarettes , but this is a totally diffirent cough . Now my chest wheezes , and in the mornings I cough up this flemn that is so thick , it looks like brown biscuit dough (sorry) . I moved from this apt. last year and can breath better , but when I removed my belongings from the bedroom closet I was in shock so bad that I got my video camera out and filmed it . The landlady knew it was growing in the closet , but never warned me .My fiancee was always sick as well .
