A major health hazard has forced the Post Office to stop delivery of mail to hundreds of people living at a Colorado Springs apartment complex. It’s happening at the Mountain Country Estates on S. Academy Blvd, just south of Pikes Peak Avenue.
Mail stopped being delivered for a short time there last November as well, according to the Post Office. Ron Perry, a spokesman for the Post Office, said the problem is mold in the mail room.
Neighbors are worried that mold could spread. “Yeah, it’s a health issue, you can get really sick,” said Jill Sullivan who’s lived at the apartment complex for two years. She said she called the office about her missing mail. “I said I haven’t got my mail for like three days now,” she told 11 News in an interview Monday.
She said the office worker confirmed mail delivery, for now, was stopped. They did not give a reason for the mail hold to residents at the complex.
“It worries me, I have two kids living in my apartment, they could get sick,” Sullivan said.
“I know it’s an inconvenience, but we do have to protect our employees,” said Perry. He confirmed with 11 News the reason the mail is on hold there is mold. Because the mail room has roughly one hundred boxes to fill, the postal worker would have to stay inside for 45 minutes to an hour to place the mail in each box. That’s something the postal carriers cannot do with mold all over the walls of the room. “It’s overwhelming,” Perry said.
Until the mail room is free from all the mold, people living there will not get any bills or letters. Instead, they will have to pick up their mail from the Post Office located at 3655 E. Fountain Blvd.
Resident Management Systems is the operating company of Mountain Country Estates. A representative from the company told 11 News a specialist was out to inspect the mail room Monday. They said the issue is being addressed, but they would not confirm that mold is the cause of the problem.
