6th International Scientific Conference on Bioaerosols, Fungi, Bacteria, Mycotoxins in Indoor & Outdoor Environments & Human Health – Call for Abstracts is Now Open!
The Fungal Research Group Foundation (FRGF) and Scientific Program Committee is announcing the Call for Abstracts for the 2011 Conference Meeting to be held September 6 – September 9, 2011 in Saratoga Springs, New York, USA. The special themes of the conference meeting are: check out
Bioaerosol.org
Since our meeting in 2003, the body of knowledge regarding indoor and occupational microbial exposure (fungi, bacteria and their allergenic, irritant and toxic by-products) and related diseases with important public health implications has grown significantly. Diseases such as allergy, asthma, inflammatory lung diseases, infections, and cases of mycotoxicosis and neurological or vascular disorders continue to be associated with exposure to bioaerosols. Complex reactions and interactions that result in adverse human health reactions pose great challenges to investigators, clinicians and public health officials.
Large scale natural disasters caused be storms and flooding that led to significant water damage and microbial contamination of homes and buildings have occurred in many countries throughout the world: USA (Mississippi, New Orleans, Iowa, North-Carolina, etc.), Pakistan, India, China, England, Poland, Germany, France, Belgium, and elsewhere. In addition to the human tragedy, the costs and technical challenges for cleaning and restoration are tremendous. How do we effectively protect the clean-up workers and the building occupants from harmful microbial contaminants (bacteria, mold, bio-toxins) and exposures?
We have learned that poor building and ventilation designs or maintenance, can contribute to increased microbial indoor exposure. Furthermore, the use of water-sensitive materials in areas with hot and humid climates, inadequate resources, as well as deficient renovation of existing architectural designs are factors that can lead to indoor mold growth. This has raised international concern about the impact of bioaerosols on the building occupants and workers’ health.
This 2011 conference will address state of art research and practical experience to improve the understanding of microbials (bacteria, mold, bio- and mycotoxins), determine important agents and diagnosis of adverse human health effects, as well as explore new treatment approaches, and the control and prevention of such exposure. Scientific advances and knowledge gaps will be discussed. Future research priorities will be developed.
Precious artwork, books, paper documents and furniture contaminated with biologicals (mold, etc.) often contribute to occupant’s exposure and patient complaints. Chemicals (called biocides) intended to kill bacteria and mold also are often harmful to humans and the environment. Little attention has been paid to these issues in hygiene practices and the systematic approach varies in the unregulated cleaning and restoration industry. Some say “a building keeps a memory” of a contamination, even after careful clean up! Some even suggest that such buildings or items should be condemned and destroyed. We would like to explore the scientific basis for safe materials and practice for the cleaning workers, users and building occupants. Clearance criteria for re-occupancy and re-use shall be critically reviewed and any minimum consensus will be explored.
This meeting will connect internationally-recognized researchers and leading investigators with “front line” practitioners and consultants addressing “real world” problems. We will explore the scientific basis for what we do and recommend.
Scientific Program and Conference Themes
We encourage abstracts in all areas of public or occupational health related to indoor and outdoor air quality and bioaerosols (see Conference Introduction). We are also interested in abstracts that focus on the special 2011 Conference Meeting themes. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words and must include a measurable learning objective. Please read the Call for Abstracts carefully.
All abstracts must be submitted online. An easy to use online form will walk you through the process step-by-step. The site is now open so you may link directly to the abstract submission form at Bioaerosol.org. Authors must provide complete and accurate contact information in order to be notified of abstract status on April 15.
Please note, the deadline for submission of abstracts range is March 15, 2011. We welcome your submission and look forward to your contribution.

PITTSBURG, Calif. (KGO) — Tenants of one East Bay apartment complex say their health is in danger and their landlord isn’t doing enough to protect them. They’re worried about black mold. A building inspector paid a visit to the Portofino Apartments in Pittsburg on Wednesday.
The building inspector did come by the apartments and he ordered the management company, Riverstone Residential Group, to fix a glaring hole in the ceiling, but tenants say there’s not enough being done about the larger issue of toxic black mold.
“It’s poisonous black mold and you need to have eye protection, mouth protection, hand protection and stuff on your body to walk in our house,” says tenant Joseph Lombardo.
Lombardo issued that warning, before letting a city building inspector in to see the collapsed ceiling in his Pittsburg apartment.
“I have this black mold all outside,” says Lombardo.
The ceiling of suddenly disintegrated last week. Until then, Lombardo, his wife and young son kept getting sick, with coughs and runny noses.
Amid the debris, Lombardo spotted what he thought was mold. The landlord at the Portofino Apartments told him it was just wet dirt and advised him to hire his own mold specialist. That specialist found high levels of toxic black mold and deemed the apartment unsafe to occupy.
“We’re at a hotel right now. My son, this has just devastated my son right now, devastated him. He has nightmares. He just wants to go home. All his new toys from Christmas are here,” says Lombardo.
The city building inspector told ABC7 it was a water leak and told us what the owner needs to do about it.
“I’m going to call them and ask them about the leak and if they don’t do anything about it, I’ll send them a notice and give them about 10 days to get permits and get it fixed,” says Pittsburg building inspector K.C. Kampton.
The city inspector says it’s not his job to identify mold or order it cleaned up.
“I can’t breathe,” says Elizabeth Sofge who lives adjacent to the Lombardos.
Sofge says she’s also been sick lately and wonders why the landlord shouldn’t have to inspect her ceiling and roof too.
“If I’m that close to him then yeah, it should be fixed because I am an asthmatic,” says Sofge.
The manager at the Portofino Apartments would not comment on tenants’ requests for cleanup of the mold problem. Her supervisors at Riverstone Residential Group did not return numerous calls from ABC7 News.
The Lombardos’ problem is just the latest involving black mold here. Several other lawsuits are pending over the issue, involving as many 30 tenants.

PITTSBURG, Calif. (KGO) — Something may be growing in the walls at an East Bay apartment complex and it’s making people sick. Now, renters who spoke up may have another problem besides worrying about their health.
“We got sick. Runny noses, coughing, stuff like that, just normal sickness we thought we were catching from outside,” said tenant Joseph Lombardo.
But the illnesses were never-ending. It was a medical mystery to Lombardo’s family until the answer fell right through his ceiling.
“We were getting sick from mold and I went down there and asked them, ‘Is this mold?’ ‘No, it’s wet dirt.’ That’s what she told me at the office,” said Lombardo.
After he complained to the management of the Portofino Apartments in Pittsburg, Lombardo was told to hire his own mold specialist for $500.
“This was black mold they brought out of my house,” said Lombardo, as he dug through a garbage bag full of debris with black mold.
The report showed high levels of black mold and a recommendation to find and fix an apparent leak in the roof. It turns out Lombardo isn’t alone.
“He gets sick a lot, often, like ever since we kind of lived here, and he was never like that,” said tenant Stefanie Olmedo.
Other residents are complaining about respiratory illnesses and now they wonder what could be growing behind their walls and ceilings.
“Well, I know I cough a lot. And I have a 14-year-old son… the same thing,” said another resident.
Wednesday, the Pittsburg city building inspector is scheduled to examine at least one of the building’s roofs and determine if there’s proper ventilation for the apartment units.
ABC7’s attempts to contact the Portofino Apartment managers and their corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas were unsuccessful.
“I have two clients who had problems that we thought could be easily remedied,” said attorney Bob Kane.
Now they’re suing the management company, Riverstone Residential Group, and apartment owner Aspen Leverage for damages and wrongful eviction after they say they were kicked out for complaining.
“We’re not talking about people who have a lot of resources, so one of the problems is they were put in positions where they end up having to stay in these units because there’s no other place to go,” said Kane.
Thirty other tenants are also suing separately for damages and wrongful eviction. Kane said all they ever wanted is for the problem to be fixed.
