NY Times cites failures after Renaissance Village – Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Many Children Lack Stability Long After Storm – FEMA

A series of stories that started in today’s New York Times follows families from Renaissance Village, which closed in May.

The series highlights how the policies of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, East Baton Rouge Parish school system and sometimes the families’ poor choices have failed their children.

More than half of those ages 6 to 11 had a behavior or learning problem, yet in the East Baton Rouge School District children can wait for as long as two years to be tested for learning disabilities, the story says.

“After more than three years of nomadic uncertainty, many of the children of Hurricane Katrina are behind in school, acting out and suffering from extraordinarily high rates of illness and mental health problems. Their parents, many still anxious or depressed themselves, are struggling to keep the lights on and the refrigerator stocked,” the story says.

Meanwhile, the case managers FEMA promised to help the families find permanent homes have yet to start working in Louisiana.

Parties Finance Louisiana Races – Open Secrets.org

Capital Eye | OpenSecrets.org

Published by Lindsay Renick Mayer on December 5, 2008

Other lawmakers and party committees have whipped up a financial storm in the two Louisiana House races set to take place this Saturday. The party primaries in both the 2nd District and 4th were delayed in September because of Hurricane Gustav, pushing back the entire election schedule and giving interested parties more time to finance their candidates of choice.

Some of the most interested groups, it seems, are the candidates’ own parties. In the 2nd District, embattled Democratic Rep. William Jefferson’s most generous groups have been the candidate committees and leadership PACs of other lawmakers. This election cycle, Jefferson, who was indicted last year on corruption charges, has raised $294,800 compared to opponent Anh (Joseph) Cao, who has raised $113,500. In the 4th District, leadership PACs and candidate committees are among the top givers to both Democrat Paul Carmouche, who has raised a total of $1.2 million from all sources this cycle, and Republican John Fleming, who has raised $1.4 million.

Parties are taking an additional measure to ensure their candidates win the race. Together, the National Republican Congressional Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee have spent $2.1 million this cycle between both races on independent expenditures, which are ads and other promotions that are meant to support or oppose one candidate or the other. The committees can spend an unlimited amount on these efforts, and they’ve focused the bulk of their money between these two races on the 4th District race in the last week, spending $520,850.

Revealing The Sex Life Of Killer Fungus

Article Date: 02 Dec 2008

Biologists at The University of Nottingham and University College Dublin have announced a major breakthrough in our understanding of the sex life of a microscopic fungus which is a major cause of death in immune deficient patients and also a cause of severe asthma.

The discovery of a sexual cycle in the fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus is highly significant in understanding the biology and evolution of the species and will shed new light on its ability to adapt to new environments and its resistance to antifungal drugs. It is hoped the results of this research will lead to new ways of controlling this deadly disease and improved treatments for patients infected with it.

First described 145 years ago this killer fungus, until now, had no known sexual cycle and was only thought to reproduce by production of asexual spores. But researchers from the School of Biology at The University of Nottingham and from University College Dublin, have finally been able to induce sexual reproduction in this potentially lethal pathogen showing, for the first time, that A. fumigatus possesses a fully functional sexual reproductive cycle.

Dr Paul Dyer is an expert in the sexual development and population variation of fungi and co-author of ‘Discovery of a sexual cycle in the opportunistic fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus’, which was published in Nature on 30 November 2008.

Dr Dyer said: “This discovery is significant for providing both good and bad news. The bad news is that we now know that Aspergillus fumigatus can reproduce sexually, meaning that it is more likely to become resistant to antifungal drugs in a shorter period, and the sexual spores are better at surviving harsh environmental conditions. The good news is that we can use the newly discovered sexual cycle as a valuable tool in laboratory experiments to try to work out how the fungus causes disease and triggers asthmatic reactions. Once we understand the genetic basis of disease we can then look forward to devising methods to control and overcome the fungus”.

The spores of A. fumigatus, which feeds on dead or decaying organic matter, are widespread in the atmosphere. It has been estimated that everybody inhales around 200 spores each day. These spores are normally eliminated by the innate immune response. However, this fungus has become the most prevalent airborne fungal pathogen due to its ability to cause infections in hosts with a weakened immune system, with at least a 50 per cent mortality rate in humans. Four per cent of patients in modern European teaching hospitals have invasive aspergillosis; it is the leading infectious cause of death in leukaemia and bone marrow transplant patients. The fungus is also associated with severe asthma and sinusitis.

Almost one-fifth of all fungi have no known sexual stage – these include many Aspergillus, Penicillium, Coccidioides and Malassezia species which are of major economic and medical importance. However, some of these species have apparently functional sex related genes and this research could lead to a sexual revolution for many other of these supposed ‘asexuals’.

The research was carried out in collaboration with Dr Hubert Fuller and his final year PhD student Céline O’Gorman from the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science at University College Dublin. The study was funded by an IRCSET Postgraduate Research Scholarship, an EC Marie Curie Training Fellowship and a grant from the British Mycological Society, which facilitated research visits by Céline O’Gorman to The University of Nottingham.

Many fungi reproduce by sexual means. The molecular-genetic and physiological mechanisms controlling sex in fungi are being investigated at The University of Nottingham with the aim of devising new methods for the control of fungal diseases and promoting sex in beneficial species. The consequences of sex for genetic variation and evolution are being studied in model species of fungi including plant pathogens and Antarctic lichen-forming fungi.

Video – Apartment Mold Causing Sickness

FAIRVIEW, Ore. — Neighbors in a Fairview apartment complex said Wednesday that mold in their apartments is making them sick.

Tressa Stewart said mold can be found in her apartment and several others at the Fairview Arms on Seventh Street. She said most of the children and elderly who live at the complex have been diagnosed with asthma or another respiratory illness.

She also said her neighbors in the government-subsidized, low-income complex fear speaking about the problems because they’re scared of getting kicked out of the complex.

“It’s not fair for them to kill them just because they’re scared to be homeless,” Stewart said. “I’m sure if they knew it was killing them, they’d rather be homeless than dead.”

A neighbor who didn’t want to be identified showed the mold inside her home. She said she suffered a skin rash that nearly went from head to toe until she bought an air purifier, which now runs constantly.

Other neighbors said large trash bags of black mold were taken from the apartment of an elderly woman earlier this week.

Stewart said the conditions have also caused three dogs to suffer tumors on their chests. Two of those dogs died, she said.

She and her neighbors are hoping for change.

“I want them to do something about it,” Stewart said. “It’s not fair for people to not be able to breathe in their own home.”

The apartment manager said she had no comment, but said she may be able to share more information early next week.
