JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Since a story aired about a family who claims mold in their apartment killed their son, two more people have come forward about similar problems at the Villages of Baymeadows.

Action News first told you about 12-year-old Darius Thompson. His parents filed a lawsuit against the Villages of Baymeadows because they say mold in their apartment led to their son’s death.

Now, two more people are reporting similar mold problems at the same complex.

Tori Arnold lived there for four months before breaking her lease because of black mold, roaches and rats in her apartment. Arnold says her health started to suffer right after she moved into the apartment.

“The longer we lived there, the more tired and rundown I was feeling,” Arnold told Action News. “I started getting coughs and sniffles a lot.”

She reported the problems to the property manager and the Duval County Health Department.

“It was really awful. We ended up having to move and they ended up keeping our deposit and charging a lot of money to our credit and everything,” said Arnold.

Action News contacted the property manager and the owner of the complex, AimCo.

They denied there are any mold problems in any of the apartments. The complex also released this statement regarding the mold complaint: “We have a rigorous policy and procedures to address any potential environmental concerns, adhering to all state and federal regulations. It is Aimco’s policy and practice to proactively address any potential environmental issues.”

The Villages of Baymeadows also offered both tenants the option of moving into another apartment.

Tori Arnold did change apartments, but later broke her lease and moved out.

Action News contacted the health department about the mold complaints. We’re still waiting to hear back.

Note – Regarding the statement – “They denied there are any mold problems in any of the apartments. The complex also released this statement regarding the mold complaint: “We have a rigorous policy and procedures to address any potential environmental concerns, adhering to all state and federal regulations. It is Aimco’s policy and practice to proactively address any potential environmental issues.” – They always lie even when the problem is obvious and right in front of their faces.  And what good does it do to move to another of their mold filled apartments!

Mold will grow on EVERYTHING – Toxic Mold Infested Jefferson Lakes Apartments managed by Riverstone Residential

The photo below is of mold that started growing in a new pair of tennis shoes just from being in our apartment.  Massive amounts of molds had been (and still are) growing in the HVAC ducts for years.  Mold blows from the vents into the apartment and gets on and in EVERYTHING.  Kind of like a fogger for pest control.  katy

Mold Linked to Allergies

A new scientific study confirms that mold odor near baseboards is correlated with childhood allergies and rhinitis. “There are consistent findings on associations between asthma and allergy symptoms and residential mold and moisture,” says Hägerhed-Engman and colleagues.

Molds are both a biotoxin and an allergen. Allergic symptoms of mold exposure include congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, sore throat, cough, skin irritation, headache, fatigue, and light sensitivity.  Toxic mold exposure symptoms include neurological disorders, behavioral changes, chronic fatigue, and chemical sensitivity.

Should mold illness occur, prompt medical attention should be sought.  It is crucial to relocate until mold remediation has been completed.  Continued exposure to mold can cause worsening health over time.

Keeping a home dry and well ventilated decreases the chance of mold.  A dehumidifier may be useful in humid climates and damp places such as laundry rooms and bathrooms.  Checking regularly for leaks and replacing any water damaged building materials promptly will reduce the chances of mold taking hold.

Inadequate ventilation increases the risk of both mold discovery and the health effects of any existing mold.

Researchers say the only true way to determine if baseboard odor is linked to hidden mold problems is to take apart the baseboard and break into the wall and floor to look for visible moisture damage.

There are many different kinds of bacteria, fungi, and spores which grow on nearly any surface under the right conditions.  Moist places, such as air ducts, ceilings, and plumbing enclosures are most problematic.  Homeowners frequently neglect regular cleaning of these out-of-reach places and mold can develop and fester quite readily.  Energy efficient hermetically sealed homes do not allow moisture to escape through adequate ventilation.

Mold and dampness is linked to many health problems, including respiratory disease, asthma, allergies, immune disease, behavioral disorders, and toxic poisoning.  Occupying a moldy building nearly doubles the chance of asthma.

Molds can have devastating health effects, particularly on young, developing children.  Odor along baseboards may signify hidden moisture or mold problems within the walls or foundation of a building.

Indictment Accuses Mob of Infiltrating NYC Building Department, Taking Bribes To Grant Building Permits, Expedite Inspections And Overlook Building Violations

October 2, 2009

The Manhattan District Attorney on October 1, 2009 announced the indictment and arrest of 29 people and four corporations for enterprise corruption, bribery, bribe receiving, extortion, narcotics and firearms trafficking, and illegal gambling.  Among the individual defendants are members and associates of the Cosa Nostra Lucchese Organized Crime Family (“Lucchese Crime Family”), including three inspectors formerly employed by the New York City Department of Buildings and two members of the Family ruling panel; three other former building inspectors; and individuals and companies in the construction and real estate industry.  The District Attorney accused the mob of seeking to place associates in a government agency and influence the routine functions of that agency.

The Mob’s infiltration to supervisory positions within the Building Department is one thing that distinguishes this construction-related corruption scandal from recent ones such as the one that resulted from the 2 crane collapses last year and the one involving fraud and fake test results against a laboratory hired to verify the strength of concrete at major New York City construction projects.  Among the Building Department positions involved are building inspectors in the DOB Bronx Construction Division, the DOB Scaffolding Safety Unit, and the DOB Manhattan Construction Division, the Inspection Manager for the DOB Bronx Division, Supervising Inspector in the DOB Manhattan Construction Division, and inspector in the DOB Scaffolding Safety Unit.

The indictment is a result of a two-year investigation by the district attorney’s office and the Police Department. The investigation began in New Jersey, where agents were listening in on the phones of an alleged Luchese-run, Internet-based sports- gambling ring that authorities believe has netted $400 million for the crime family in the last two years. The investigation used wiretaps of 64 telephones, 54 search warrants and a bug hidden in a restaurant.

Building and construction site locations charged in the Indictment for which bribes were paid to defendant DOB inspectors were, in New York County: (1) 110 Fulton Street; (2) 11 West 25th Street; (3) 316 West 51st Street; (4) 75 Wall Street; (5) 414 West 14th Street; (6) 80-82 University Place; (7) 565 West 23rd Street; (8) 1 East 35th Street; and (9) 283 Amsterdam Avenue; and in Bronx County: (10) 550 East 170th Street; (11) 3305 3rd Avenue; (12) 731 Southern Boulevard; (13) 6677 Broadway; (14) 341 and 343 East 149th Street; (15) 1-5 Teddy Place, a/k/a 3250 Rawlins Avenue; (16) 2520 Park Avenue; (17) 1975 Sedgwick Avenue; (18) 323 White Plains Road; and (19) 811 Walton Avenue.

Last year’s two crane collapses in Manhattan, which killed nine people, led to investigations by Mr. Morgenthau’s office and the Department of Investigation that exposed corruption and incompetence in the building agency’s Cranes and Derricks Division. On January 5, 2009, William Rapetti, 48, and Rapetti Rigging Services Inc., a tower crane rigger and his company, were indicted on multiple charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, reckless endangerment and failure to file tax returns.

In the concrete-strength fraud matter, Stallone Testing Labs Inc., a laboratory hired to verify the strength of concrete at major New York City construction projects was indicted on charges that it faked test results at nearly 100 projects including the World Trade Center memorial, the new Goldman Sachs headquarters and the control tower at LaGuardia Airport. Construction projects listed in the indictment included schools, subway stations, airport facilities and office towers.

Under city building code, a lab hired for a construction project must prepare several batches of concrete and test them for load-bearing ability. DA Morgenthau said documents seized during a search warrant at Stallone’s offices showed that many tests were never performed.

Amphion investee Myconostica launches diagnostic test for Aspergillus fungus

October 14, 2009

Amphion Innovations PLC (AIM: AMP) investee company Myconostica Ltd has launched a new test to identify one of the most common causes of fungal pneumonia. The assay, MycAssay Aspergillus, is a real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test which accurately and rapidly identifies infections caused by Aspergillus.

Myconostica, in which Amphion holds a 22 percent stake, is a UK-based medical diagnostic company specialised in molecular diagnostic tests for life-threatening fungal infections.

In a statement, it said pneumonia caused by Aspergillus is the leading cause of infectious death in leukaemia and bone marrow patients with an estimated 10 million people at risk globally each year. Studies have shown that diagnosis of Aspergillus infection followed by antifungal treatment within the first 10 days of infection reduces mortality from 90 to 40 percent thus highlighting the necessity of rapid diagnostic testing.

While traditional methods may take up to 10 days to produce a result, MycAssay Aspergillus, combined with Myconostica’s fungal DNA extraction system, can deliver it within 3 hours.

MycAssay Pneumocystis, for the detection of infections caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii was launched earlier this year and further tests in the MycAssay series will also target critical fungal infections, such as Candida, Myconostica added.

Amphion’s other investments include a 19.99 percent stake in Kromek, 15.3 percent in Firestar Software, 8.5 percent in Axcess International, 38.5 percent in Motif Biosciences, 50 percent in MSA Holdings B.S.C., 24.4 percent in M2M Imaging Corp, 25 percent in Private Markets, 14.6 percent in WellGen and 100 percent in DataTern.

Amphion builds shareholder value in high growth companies in the medical and technology sectors, by using a focused, hands-on company building approach, based on decades of experience in both the US and UK.

It does not invest in speculative technologies requiring long development timeframes or excessive capital investment; it looks for defensible core intellectual property and know-how for long-term competitive advantage, and growth potential in very large markets of at least US$1 billion in size. Each partner company is chosen with the goal of achieving an exit valuation in excess of US$100 million.
