Belcher says board ignores mold, sex-attacker issues – Riverbay Corporation

Friday, March 5, 2010

By Michael Horowitz

Saying that his apartment remains unlivable because of mold contamination, civic activist Frank Belcher said, this week, that ignoring major concerns is consistent with the way the Riverbay Corporation operates.

Belcher, claiming that the mold in his apartment is still triggering his asthma attacks, said that he finds it frustrating, but not totally unexpected, that his Section 5 apartment remains unlivable. The apartment is unlivable, Belcher insisted, despite management’s 16 efforts to fix the problem since last December.

The civic activist, who fired off a letter to City News in which he attacked Co-op City’s “lackadaisical” board of directors, said, this week, that he intends to pursue legal actions against the Riverbay Corporation aimed at having his apartment cited as hazardous to his health and recouping the carrying charges he has paid since he first determined that his apartment was unlivable.

Belcher, who is black, said that management and members of the board get away with ignoring major community concerns because the black majority here refuses to “speak up” – the way people do in other neighborhoods.

Riverbay Executive General Manager Vernon Cooper has insisted repeatedly that Belcher’s apartment is livable, despite high mold counts in two environmental tests that management has paid for.

Cooper couldn’t be reached for comment this week.

Belcher said, this week, that Cooper is now insisting that no more work will be done in the activist’s apartment, so the activist has paid for an environmental firm to complete a third round of testing.

Reflecting the board’s inaction on mold in apartments and the sex attackers living in Co-op City, the civic activist said, in a letter to the editor this week, “It is business as usual.”

Belcher said that Riverbay board member Helen Atkins is the lone board member who has voiced any concern about the pervasive mold problem in his apartment and the possibility of mold problems in other apartments.

Belcher stressed, “We continue to be stuck with a board of directors that is dysfunctional and incapable of taking care of the shareholders’ business.”

The civic activist said, in his letter to the editor, that management continues to “lie” about the difficulties in getting convicted sex offenders booted from Co-op City.

Belcher said that he finds it outrageous that management and the board of directors have failed to act, over the last three years, on the sex-offender issue despite his repeated urgings for action and the support his efforts have received in the City News.

Turning to the mold problem in his apartment, Belcher said, “When I discovered the mold problem in my apartment, management did all it could to cover up the problem. The lies that they told me were too numerous to count. I never knew how unprofessional and arrogant management could be until I tried to get them to correct the mold problems in my apartment.”

Belcher added, “They still deny there is a problem with mold in Co-op City, despite the fact that a company that they hired to do an air-quality check found elevated levels of mold in my apartment and in the outer hall (by the elevators). This is a problem they will continue to cover up because they don’t want you to know that there is a problem with mold. …”

Pointing out that he has received about 15 phone calls from people suffering with mold in their apartments. Belcher said that it is past time for management officials  and members of the Riverbay board to abandon their usual lethargy and act assertively.

Belcher said that mold problems in Co-op City are inevitable, considering the many problems with water leaks in the community and the unwillingness of management to make repairs aimed at preventing the build-up of mold contamination.

“Riverbay never properly repaired leaks in the past, and I am a witness to their shoddy work,” Belcher said. “After having repairs in my apartment ay least five times, I know the difference. They would do a great job repairing the outside of a water-damaged wall, but they never dried out the inside of the wall until recently. This is why there are problems with mold in apartments in Co-op City.”

Turning to the apathy of Riverbay board members, Belcher said, “ I still can’t get over the lackadaisical attitude of this board of directors. They address nothing. Why did they run for the position if they weren’t going to conduct the shareholders’ business?”

Belcher asked rhetorically, “Considering the do-nothingism that has engulfed this board, why do we need them?”

New Committee to Promote the Truth about the Health Effects of Indoor Contaminants

March 3, 2010

By TruthAboutMold

Feb 2010 letter to CIAQ

ACHEMMIC is a newly formed group of physicians, scientists, researchers, indoor air quality experts, industrial hygienists, building engineers, advocates and others who are working together to promote the truth in health policy about the adverse effects of mold, microbes and indoor contaminants.

In October of 2006, the late Senator Kennedy requested that the Federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) perform an audit of the current understanding of the health effects of mold. The result from the two-year audit was a report issued in September of 2008 titled “Indoor Mold: Better Coordination of Research on Health Effects and More Consistent Guidance Would Improve Federal Efforts”. The GAO deemed that the CIAQ would be the perfect committee to oversee that this endeavor was carried out to ensure all Federal agencies are sending the same, accurate message in the name of public health.

ACHEMMIC is encouraging the EPA, CIAQ, Mold Work Group, and GAO to follow through on the recommendations of the GAO in the name of better public health for people who have been harmed by mold, microbes and indoor contaminants.

On February 16, ACHEMMIC sent a letter to numerous elected officials and government agencies. The letter includes 20 action items requesting specific actions be addressed by these government agencies. The letter also provides quotes from several reports and key statistics regarding this important public health crisis.

The following statements are from the 2009 report by the World Health Organization titled “”Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality–Dampness and Mould.”

“Indoor air pollution such as from dampness and mould, chemicals and other biological agents is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. About 1.5 million deaths each year are associated with the indoor combustion of solid fuels, the majority of which occur among women and children in low-income countries.”

“The prevalence of indoor dampness varies widely within and among countries, continents and climate zones. It is estimated to affect 10 to 50% of indoor environments in Europe, North America, Australia, India and Japan. In certain settings, such as river valleys and coastal areas, the conditions of dampness are substantially more severe than the national averages for such conditions.”

The following quotes are from a 2007 study in Finland.

“At least one in ten, and possibly as many as one in five, cases of asthma among children are linked with water damage in the building.”

“It has been estimated that between 84 to 95 per cent of fungus spores and 27 to 46 per cent of fragments can end up in the lungs, and it is believed that the fragments can get into the lower respiratory tracts of small children more easily than that of others.”

The statistics relating to the economic impact of health problems caused by indoor contaminants are staggering. The following statistics are from a January 27, 2010 article on Wire Service Canada.

“William Fisk from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California established a baseline for quantifying benefits from improved IAQ and demonstrated the economic impacts of increased productivity. Findings are showing that improvement in IAQ can: Reduce SBS symptoms by 20 to 50 percent, with estimated savings of $10 to $100 billion; Reduce asthma by 8 to 25 percent, with estimated savings of $1 to $4 billion; Reduce other respiratory illnesses by 23 to 76 percent, with estimated savings of $6 to $14 billion; Improve office worker productivity by 0.5 to 5 percent, with estimated savings of $20 to $200 billion.”

These numbers are significantly greater than the millions of dollars being spent by certain corporate interests who are intent on denying the health effects of mold and other indoor contaminants.

In summary, millions of Americans have been harmed by molds, microbes and other contaminants inside their homes, apartments, schools and businesses. Many of these individuals and families have lost everything—their health, homes, personal belongings, jobs, financial security, their sense of safety, and their hope for the future. To say it another way, they have lost a lifetime of hard work and achievements. They are counting on our government to right this wrong, to stop this devastation, and to ensure that the truth is told.

Mold Problems Causes Illness in Family – Apartment Mold Cover-up? – Doctor asks apartment manager to step in and get rid of mold

A mold cover-up? A baby is fighting breathing problems and a doctor asked an apartment manager to step in and get rid of the mold. Now, the manager is accused of covering up the mold instead of fixing the problem.

Coughing, wheezing and hacking are symptoms the Gorski family says began after moving into their apartment at Holland place in Appleton.

They’re the sounds of cold season. But for this family of five, they’re symptoms that won’t go away. “The two youngest one Jennifer and jack were coughing all the time.” Joe Gorski explained. It was a red flag for a family who’s youngest has suffered from a heart condition from  birth.

Even more mysterious, the family says the symptoms would disappear when they stepped outside. “As we would leave the apartment and go somewhere for the who day, everybody would start feeling better.” Gorski said.

That’s when Joseph says he discovered something growing on the ceiling. “I was actually laying on the couch watching TV when I looked up and seen the mold on the ceiling. I went what the heck?”

While it may have started there, the Gorski’s say they soon discovered it all over their place. “And then it started around the air conditioner around the windows, back again from the wall.

The apartment management tried to clean up and paint over several times. But Joseph Gorski says just hasn’t worked. “You can actually see the mold coming back, on the casing through here.” Gorski described.

The apartment’s manager who wouldn’t go on camera with NBC26 but says because she was new, she was unaware of any issues involving the couple or their concerns.

Health issues that Heather Gorski says she’s reminded of all day long..”Seeing them cry in pain, wheezing, coughing, how hard they’d cough that’s gotta hurt.”

NBC26 also spoke with a representative of Dominium who owns the complex. We were issued a statement saying the company takes all concerns seriously. But admitted the wooden frame windows were prone to condensation. The company has asked tenants to wipe the condensation away.
