  1. LORRAINE says:

I lived in an apartment which appeared to be very nice, but nearly killed me. It was infested with many serious environmental toxins from numerous floods, molds, dumpster overflowing weekly smelling throughout my apartment, sewage/feces backup in bathtubs, bathroom and kitchen sinks clogged and a not working dishwasher, malfunctioning windows, electrical heat, damp, infestation of different molds climbing my walls, furniture, clothes, shoes, linen and tree-like growths growing along hallway, bathroom & kitchen, kitchen floor swelled from past floods then holes blowing toxins into the air, no locks, electrical heat freezing & air conditioner without cover, no running water, nowhere to wash dishes, pots and pans, utensils caked on dog urine etc,

Suddenly I was critically ill & dying. Over the following 14 months I was hospitalized six times, in the Trauma Center twice, Last Rights twice, admitted into the Respiratory ICU for 11 days, Medical ICU for five days, many rescue rides to E.R. visits and in Hospice Care for two months. When I moved Hospice discharged me within two weeks.

I had three chronic illnesses and never had any complications, symptoms, illnesses or hospitalizations before I moved into Evergreen Apt. in Cranston. My liver became very sick very fast. I then needed a liver transplant. I began the first of many appointments to Beth Israel in Boston to begin the long, exhausting, extensive and terrifying process to get on a liver transplant list. I was for the first time, was facing death. I had many MRIs, Cat Scans, Ultra Sounds, liver biopsy and blood work. I had to become horribly ill and near death to get a liver if they even had one, and if they did, my body would reject it, I’d need another liver, if not, I would die, eliminating a treatment that could have rid my body of viruses and I would be cured forever.

My liver decomposed too much for me to have an Interferon treatment. They made me very sick, I’m at risk of liver cancer, I can no longer have the Interferon treatment, need a liver, keep the liver and the virus could damage the new liver in five years.

My son, Shane, grandson Hayden and I had a prepaid, no change vacation to Disney. needed to see Hayden in Disney. I decided to go and rent a wheel chair. By the time I arrived at Logan Airport, I miraculously felt well and kept up with my 3 year old for almost two weeks fun in the sun.

I arrived home and became critically ill fast. Fungi and mold grew along my hallway, up the walls, under the rugs, on my furniture, clothes, in my air conditioner, everywhere.

Within two months I became critically ill. My family did not hear from me for four days. My 19-year old son crawled through my window. He saw maybe the worse site he will ever see. I was non-responsive, non-verbal, my skin was gray, my lips, mouths and teeth were caked with dry blood, I was undressed and laying in my own waste. Shane called 911 then my mother sobbing. The doctor told Shane I would have been comatose by morning. Chances of me coming out of a hepatic coma was next to none.

My illnesses all have to do with environmental toxins, and my symptoms made me a person who could not function alone.

This was the end. My family felt I would not make it. They believed they would leave without me. My older sister did not leave my side the entire time. I lived. I was discharged for two days and stayed with family. I was then admitted into Butler Hospital for neurological and psychological evaluation.

Jean Lamastra, the manager knew the apartment was unlivable and filled with all types of toxins. She knew I was seriously ill and fighting for my life. She/they did nothing. She abused my mother verbally and emotionally. My mother begged her to make her daughter’s home livable. Jean began hanging up on her.

My mother lived my life for two years. She took over all of my affaires, took care of my cat, house, mail, washing clothes, running back and forth between the hospitals and my apartment, cancelled a vacation and ended up on a anti-depressant Jean told me it would be cheaper to evict me than fix the apartment. While in Hospice Care, I was evicted. The medical people from Hospice helped me find an apartment and pack. They were relieved I moved.

Dr. Carpenter has been my doctor for 20 years. He for the first time in 20 years he did not know what was causing my illnesses. It wasn’t until the beginning of 2008 when I began finding the pictures of all the deficiencies, letters from Cranston Housing Authority canceled payment and their contract for non-compliance to housing standards, Minimum Housing complaints dated back to 2000 are exactly the same as mine, one mine and don‘t remember, family and Dr. C. I do not know how I made the connection to unsanitary living conditions.

I spoke with Dr. C. , he is willing to help in anyway he can without cost, Susan my nurse will gather whatever medical records we need without cost . My three sisters are nurses and were involved in my care along with my sons. Of course they will do all they can, Marie Fisher, the coordinator will testify on my behalf. The rug installer may help too.

I did not know I was dying until I was in Hospice Care. I asked my mother if I was and she told me Hospice has changed, they assist people who are very sick not just the dying. I found Hospice’s reports on my bookshelf and I read it, “pronounced dead and transport to the funeral parlor.“ signed by Dr. Carpenter. I sat in my rocking chair and rocked and rocked and rocked, my sons, my grandchildren, my everyone & everything……… Please help me.
